Easing back in with a Review Week

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and time spent with loved ones.  Since we took the week off last week to celebrate and count the blessings in our lives, this week we will ease back into our letter-sound of the week project with a review week.  Of the 14 letters we have highlighted so far, we have covered 4 vowels (each with a short and a long sound) and 10 consonant sounds. 

Much of what we have done so far has focused on the sounds and recognizing their corresponding letter symbol.  Sound-symbol association knowledge is important, but there are other skills essential to literacy development.  Phonological awareness skills are crucial to later reading and spelling success. This is includes things like rhyming and the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds within words (which can be particularly challenigng for children who struggle to say some sounds correctly).  You can read more about phonological awareness here.  This Reading Mama has an extensive list of literacy terms and definitions here and Teach Mama defines key early literacy terms every parent should know here.

As you review this week, think of ways to play with sounds.  Activity Tailor has an awesome activity "Sound Wand" to work on phonemic awareness skills.
